Wildfire Threatens 70 Homes Along The U.S./Mexico Border
Campo, California (CNN) - A high school in California now serves as a Red Cross evacuation center.
The Shockey brush fire forced authorities to evacuate 70 homes just north of the Mexican border. Kelly Zombro is the Deputy Fire Chief at the fire. He said, "It was fairly slow-moving but inaccessible some spotting, then it started picking up rapidly. Once the wind got on it, it's become very difficult to get to. It's very remote. The roads are dirt and very difficult to get across, which makes it difficult for people to get out of the way as well as for us to get in and help them." The Shockey Fire started just after noon on Sunday, south of Interstate-8 about 65 miles east of San Diego. By the late afternoon, the fire had burned one-thousand acres and destroyed four structures along the U-S/Mexico border. Two helicopters, four air tankers, and 15 engines joined the fight, as four crews worked to get the fire under control. Authorities are still investigating what might have caused the fire.
