California Governor Signs Gay Conversion Therapy Ban

By Paul Johnson

Sacramento, California (CNN) - A California bill has banned therapy aimed at changing the sexual orientation of anyone under the age of 18. California's governor signed the bill into law ... though the ban on so-called "reparative therapy" doesn't kick in until January 1st.
Governor Jerry Brown tweeted that this kind of therapy has driven young people to depression and suicide. And according to the American Psychiatric Association, reparative therapy's risks include anxiety and self-destructive behavior. But the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality denounces the ban. The group says it takes away the rights of parents and jeopardizes the livelihoods of licensed therapists.
