Mom Says Sickness Got Son Kicked Off Team

By Paul Johnson

Tracy, California (CNN) - A California woman with a 25-pound tumor says her son was kicked off his high school football team because of her medical issues. The coach of the Tracy High School football team cut Austin Westfall, this week. Westfall says he missed four practices, when he took his mother to emergency doctor appointments. IS THAT REASONABLE? A REASONABLE EXCUSE? "To miss practice? To go help my mom? Yeah, that's a perfectly reasonable excuse. I don't understand what the problem is with that, because if it was their mom or their kids, I know they'd miss practice to go be with them." "In this case Austin missed four practices because of my health issues." A statement issued by the school principal reads, "...all student athletes are given exceptions to attendance rules for their own health and the health of their family members." It goes on to say that no student athlete would be punished or dismissed from a team for excused absences.
