Los Angeles, California (CNN) - Authorities say he showed up at Los Angeles International Airport on a flight from Japan wearing a bulletproof and flame retardant pants under his trench coat.
That's enough to get pretty much anybody referred for a secondary search.
But when Customs officials searched Yongda Huang Harris' luggage -- that's when things got even more strange and worrisome.
According to an affidavit, agents found -- among other things -- a pyrotechnic smoke grenade, several billy clubs, a full-face respirator, a hatchet, body bags, a biohazard suit and handcuffs.
They aren't sure what Harris -- a 28-year-old naturalized U-S citizen of Chinese descent -- was planning to do with these items.
But it was enough to land the Boston resident in police custody.
He made his first court appearance today in Los Angeles.
But his hearing was postponed until Friday.
