Albuquerque, New Mexico (CNN) - Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico are searching for the person responsible for the shooting of a security officer.
The officer was on patrol near the Kirtland Air Force Base when he approached a group and was attacked early Thursday morning.
"Based upon his radio transmission he said he called out four individuals. It appears that three were clad in dark clothing, one he said was clad in a red hoodie. We don't know which of the four may have shot him, but we do know, this is something I left out, his gunshot wound was sustained from his own weapon, ok. We recovered that weapon. There apparently was no other weapon involved, so we're looking at that too. How they of course obtained his weapon. We don't know if some sort of struggle or some sort of physical altercation occurred for them to even grab his weapon."
The officer was conducting a security patrol at the Maxwell housing development, which is off-base near Carlisle and Gibson.
Police have not released the officer's name.
But they say he is listed in satisfactory condition at a nearby hospital.
