Salt Lake City, Utah (CNN) - Democratic Congressman Jim Matheson of Utah managed to edge out a win against rising Republican star Mia Love.
The two were evenly matched in fundraising and at the polls until about midnight when Matheson pulled ahead to keep his seat. Public service is not about winning elections. To me public service means you proudly assume the duty to make a difference. (cheering) And I tell ya what, I think I've done that. And I gotta tell ya these last 12 years have been some of the most amazing experiences of my life and I look forward to continuing this journey together in the new fourth congressional district, thank you very much.
As Utah's only Democratic member of Congress, Matheson is used to close races.
He barely squeaked by in 2010 with 50-percent of the vote.
