Governor Brown Applauds Californians Approval Of Tax Hike On The Wealthy
Sacramento, California (CNN) - The governor of California was not up for re-election last night but he's still celebrating a victory.
Voters in the state approved a measure that raises taxes on the wealthy and hikes the state sales tax. Governor Jerry Brown had championed the measure as a way to prevent massive budget cuts to the state's public schools and universities. He went to voters with the proposal after losing a battle for the tax increase with Republican lawmakers last year. "We joined together as Californians first in a resounding victory for education and fiscal integrity. The people of California have put their trust in a bold path forward and I intend to do everything in my power to honor that trust." The measure temporarily raises income taxes on people making more than 250-thousand dollars a year. It also adds a quarter-cent to the sales tax. Comments ( |
