Prosecutors Dropping Marijuana Cases After Voters Approve Legalization Of Pot
Seattle, Washington (CNN) - The voters have spoken.
And prosecutors are listening.
In Washington state, King and Pierce County attorneys say they are dropping pending cases of marijuana possession.
On Tuesday, voters in that state approved a measure legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.
"There seems to be no point to me to continue trying to prosecute people, put them in jail, get criminal records on people for conduct which is going to be legal in a couple weeks."
"I think it's pretty clear what the people of the state of Washington intended by this vote, which is for simple possession, adults, under an ounce, it should not be a crime. That's an easy directive for me to follow"
The measure passed in the state makes possession of an ounce or less of marijuana legal for people 21 years or older.
The state Liquor Control Board still must establish guidelines for the sale and distribution of marijuana.
