Unarmed Man Shot Dead By Police As Brother Speeds Away
Willowbrook, California (CNN) - The family of a man shot dead by sheriff's deputies want to know why they opened fire on the unarmed father of two.
Friends, family, and members of the community gathered to show support for the widow and children of Jose De La Trinidad.
Investigators say the 36-year-old was riding in a car with his brother, who sped away from a traffic stop, Saturday night.
When Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies caught up to them, they say De La Trinidad got out of the car, raising his arm from his waistband.
Thinking he had a gun, the deputies opened fire and killed him.
He did not have a gun.
De La Trinidad's family says the arm motion is the result of a severe arm injury the man had. "It's not fair, and I want to know why, Why? What am I supposed to do now?" "You can't just start shooting people just because you assume something. You just can't sit there, He's not the only one. There are a lot of people that's been done that. When do you say stop?"
Family members say De La Trinidad was killed while trying to do the right thing: getting out of the vehicle before his brother once again sped away.
