Hero Bus Driver Saves Girl In Wheelchair

By Paul Johnson

San Jose, California (CNN) - A California school bus driver is being credited with saving the life of a disabled student who was on her bus after it caught fire.
The fire broke out in the engine of the bus, as it was about to leave a San Jose middle school this morning.
When Wilma Acosta saw the smoke, she immediately went to the back of the bus, where a student in a wheel chair was sitting.
Acosta tried to lower the bus's wheel chair ramp but could not... because the fire had disabled the electronics onboard.
So she made a quick decision, that ultimately saved the girl.
The power short circuited, so the lift was not functional and it was a self-propelled wheelchair, so it was very, very heavy. The only option she had was to unbuckle her from her wheelchair and carry her off the bus."
Both Wilma and the student are now doing fine.
