Big Stink Over Dead Whale On Malibu Beach
Malibu, California (CNN) - No one knows how long a dead whale will be left to rot on a California beach. The 41-foot whale was found Monday morning in Malibu on a beach called Little Dume.
The city of Malibu assumed the county would remove the dead whale carcass. But the county insisted Little Dume is a private beach, and therefore not their responsibility. The issue over jurisdiction delayed movement of the whale for so long it's started to decompose -- meaning towing it to sea is no longer an option. "The tides is very high and the fact that the whale is in a pretty significant state of decomposition. So removing it off the beach via tow might be a difficult proposition right now." The California Department of Parks and Recreation says moving the whale now could create a mess if the decomposing carcass breaks apart. Comments ( |
