Legal Same Sex Marriage Takes Place

By Paul Johnson

Seattle, Washington (CNN) - The new law of the land in Washington State has led to shows of pure joy for same sex couples tying the knot. Gay and lesbian couples rushed to exchange wedding vows just after midnight Sunday. It was the earliest weddings could take place because of the state's three-day waiting period. The couples got their marriage licenses on Thursday when same-sex marrigage first became legal in Washington state.
Voters there approved referendum 74 for marriage equality last month. Voters in Maryland and Maine also approved same sex marriage on November 6th. Maine will begin issuing marriage licenses December 29th and Maryland will begin January first. The U-S Supreme Court indicated Friday it would take up gay marriage cases in the spring.
