San Francisco, California (CNN) Underwater search crews have unearthed a 19th century shipwreck near San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced the discovery Wednesday.

The passenger steamer "City of Chester" was traveling up the California coast on August 22nd, 1888, when it was struck by the steamer Oceanic.

The vessel reportedly remained afloat for six minutes before it sunk.

16 people died in the accident.

Apparently, crews first found the ship two years after it sunk to the bottom of the ocean, but it was forgotten.
