Los Angeles, California (CNN) - Wearing a huge smile ... Nguyen Quoc Quan got off a plane in Los Angeles after a harrowing experience in Vietnam.
Quan is a democracy activist and had been imprisoned for the last nine months, his family said.
He was originally charged with terrorism and attempting to overthrow the government, but those charges were later reduced to subversion.
Quan's release comes after immense international pressure.
He is a member of a group called the Viet Tan.
Their mission is to overcome dictatorship and build democracy in Vietnam.
