Student's Military Type Shovel Causes A Nine School Lockdown

Meridian, Idaho (KBOI) - A student who brought a military type shovel to school for a project accidentally caused a massive school lockdown in the Meridian School District Thursday.

A total of nine schools were Meridian were affected after Ada County Dispatch says a call came in at 8:56 a.m. of an armed person entered Heritage Middle School with an ax.

"My son is texting me and he's pretty scared, " one parent told KBOI 2News.

Meridian Police said earlier that officers conducted a room by room search of Heritage Middle School. Officers were seen around the property with rifles.

Police told KBOI anchor Trina Cobley that someone was spotted running with an ax at Heritage Middle School.

"They (the teachers) took my son right out of my arms and told me the school was in lockdown," Cobley said.

Cobley also has two nephews that go to Heritage.

Police said early on that no students were ever in danger. They identified the student and relayed to parents that everything was OK.

"Your children are all safe," Meridian Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea told a crowd of parents.

Parents at Heritage are now being allowed to pick up their children and take them home if they choose to do so.
