Students Try For World Record Balloon Launch

Ramona, California (CNN) - High school students from San Diego are hoping to make their way into the Guinness Book of World Records.
They launched a giant latex balloon Wednesday, hoping it will land somewhere near Africa.
It's the culmination of a five-month contest to design a small payload -- in this case, a small Styrofoam cone -- loaded with a beacon which will beam back its location.
The current record for a long distance launch is 78-hundred miles.
The students are shooting for 85-hundred.
Their aim is to get it up into the jet stream -- more than 100-thousand feet into the air -- and let it drift to the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
