Oregon To Allow Undocumented Immigrants In-State College Tuition Rates
Salem, Oregon (CNN) - Oregon will allow some undocumented immigrants to get in-state college tuition rates.
Governor John Kitzhaber signed the Tuition Equity Bill this morning in a packed room at the state Capitol.
The law gives undocumented immigrant students in-state tuition rates if they meet a few requirements.
Some of those include attending high school in Oregon for at least three years and showing proof of intent to become a U-S citizen.
Supporters who attended the bill's signing ceremony celebrated the change.
"It really fills my heart to see all these young people so excited about their opportunities and about moving forward. I'm very happy."
"It was really emotional. You see people crying and you really see how these are actual human beings, and it's going to impact their lives."
The bill goes into effect this summer, which means students will pay in-state tuition rates at the start of the new school year.
