Shots Fired at West Valley City Police Department
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (CBS) - Authorities say one person has been shot after someone fired a gun Monday morning in the lobby of a police department in a Salt Lake City suburb.
West Valley City Police Sgt. Jason Hauer says the shooting happened a little before 8:30 a.m. Monday. He described the situation as stable but didn't have information on who was involved.
Dispatchers at Valley Emergency Communications Center say one person was shot but didn't have information on the person's condition.
According to KUTV, a man with a gun entered the police department Monday morning and asked for an officer to come to the lobby. When the officer would not enter the lobby, the man reportedly pulled a gun.
One officer then shot multiple rounds, hitting the suspect, according to the station. The suspect was reportedly transported to a hospital with unknown injuries. No officers or workers were hurt in the incident, the station reports.
The beleaguered police department has drawn attention after federal and local prosecutors dropped nearly 100 cases that came out of the department's drug unit. The now-disbanded narcotics unit is the subject of internal investigations and probes by the county attorney, U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI.
West Valley City's population is about 132,000.
