Washington D.C. (CNN) - Anticipation is building as the U.S. Supreme court is expected to issue a landmark decision in the battle for gay rights this month.
The high court is set to rule on California's controversial ban on same-sex marriage, known as prop 8.
Just how big an impact the decision will have depends on the exact nature of the court's ruling.
Possible outcomes range from simply upholding the ban ... To ruling that state bans on same-sex marriages are unconstitutional.
If the latter happens, same-sex marriage would be effectively legalized in the u-s.
Less sweeping decisions could apply only to California or to states with similar laws about domestic partnerships.
The ruling is expected before the end of the month, when the court breaks for summer recess.
