Crosses Near Mexican Border Mark Deaths
Phoenix, Arizona (CNN) - In Arizona, these simple white crosses now mark the deaths of immigrants trying to cross the border from Mexico.
The Maricopa county sheriff's office says 14 immigrants have died the desert south of phoenix since June in an area known as gild bend.
Deputies will leave white wooden crosses where immigrants have died trying to cross the desert.
More than 30 people have also been rescued from the area, but sheriff Joe Arpaio says others are dying in unknown numbers due to the heat and brutal conditions of the desert.
He says the crosses -- made by inmates -- will also serve as landmarks, so people who call for help can give their location to rescuers.
