New Year's Day Tradition Has Thousands Of People Jumping Into Cold Water

By Paul Johnson

Cayucos, California (CNN) - You don't often see polar bears in central California, but these aren't your typical kind of polar bear.
Thousands of people -- many of them in costume -- gathered on the beach in Cayucos to take part in a "polar bear dip."
The idea is that a quick jump into cold water can be invigorating.
So, that's what these people did -- running into and out of the very cold waters of the Pacific Ocean.
This New Year’s Day tradition was in its thirty-second year, drawing locals and out-of-towners by the thousands.
