Salt Lake City, Utah (CNN) - The ACLU is now suing the state of Utah over the state's refusal to recognize same-sex marriage.
Some couples were wed after a federal court struck down a state ban on legally-recognized same-sex marriages and before the u-s supreme court called for an end to those ceremonies while the state of Utah appeals.
For those who already got married, the state has put recognition of their marriages on hold.
The ACLU is suing Utah on behalf of four of those couples.
It says those marriages are still valid and those couples should be treated the same way as married heterosexual couples.
The office of Utah governor Gary Herbert released a statement saying his administration is following the law.
It also reads, quote, "We respect the rights of those who disagree to take their grievances before a judge."
