Tonapah, Arizona (CNN) - A man allegedly attacked a greyhound bus driver in Arizona, causing the bus to crash and sending about two dozen people to hospitals.
The bus was heading from Los Angeles to Phoenix.
Police believe the man was hallucinating under the influence of drugs.
Police say passengers quickly sprang to the driver's aid and kept the bus from going into oncoming traffic.
The bus instead hit a dirt median.
Police say the man and his girlfriend ran off into the desert, but came back about a half hour later and were arrested.
The man faces 48 counts of felony endangerment, 24 counts of assault and three counts of aggravated assault.
There could be additional charges.
