San Diego, California (CNN) - Many parents have things about their past they may not tell their kids.
Imagine being a California man who just found out his mother escaped from prison before he was born.
Police say Judy Lynn Hayman has been a fugitive for 37 years, having escaped from a prison in Michigan.
San Diego police found the now-60-year-old woman at this apartment complex.
Officials say she had been living under various aliases.
"We got there. There was an adult son, 32-years-old, who was there visiting and, based on the officer's observation; the son seemed very surprised at this information that she was a wanted fugitive."
Prison officials in Michigan say Hayman pleaded guilty to a larceny charge in 1976.
Officials say she was ten months into a sentence of 16 to 24 months when she escaped.
