Suspect Killed By Police On Waikiki Street

Honolulu, Hawaii (CNN) - Honolulu police are explaining why a patrol officer shot and killed a hit and run driver in Waikiki Wednesday night.
Police says 52-year old Richard Lee Nelson rear-ended a bus right in front of the officer, then drank from an alcoholic beverage.
The officer tried to stop nelson from taking off but -- witness say -- he made u-turns, threw the car in reverse, and drove into sidewalks.
The officer -- a six-year veteran of the force -- shot and killed nelson.
A police spokesman said there things could have been much worse.
"This was an unfortunate incident, we are very, very lucky that other people weren't injured or killed."
The officer is on administrative leave.
That's standard practice after such a shooting.
