5,000 Homes Still Evacuated Near Intense San Marcos Fire

By KMVT News

San Marcos, California (CNN) Wildfires in southern California have scorched nearly 10-thousand acres and forced thousands from their homes.

Possibly the worst fire is in San Marcos, a heavily populated area that's also home to a California State University campus.

Five thousand homes there are still evacuated.

At least three houses have been lost to the fire and another was damaged.

According to authorities, the intense San Marcos Fire was sucking so much oxygen that it was creating its own weather system.

Firefighters are using a combination of helicopters, military aircraft and extra manpower to battle the fire.

As of Thursday, officials said the San Marcos fire was only five-percent contained.
