SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker has
signed two ordinances aimed at protecting gay residents from
discrimination.

The ordinances were unanimously approved last week by the City
Council after The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came
out in support of the twin measures.

The move garnered attention because it was the first time the
Mormon church had announced its support of gay rights legislation.

The ordinances make it illegal to fire someone or evict them
from a residence because of their sexual orientation or gender
identity.

Becker signed the ordinances in a ceremony Tuesday, lauding them
as a step toward building an inclusive and safe community.
