It hasn't happened in Twin Falls just yet, but in other locations, shoppers can make donations to Salvation Army bell ringers, using plastic as well as paper.

The Salvation Army near Portland, Oregon has bitten the bullet, enabling customers without a lot of cash to make their donations with either credit or debit cards. The high tech method is bringing bell ringing into the 21st Century.

Bell ringer Francine Saunders says, “Even people that don't donate, they're like wow! You guys are taking credit or debit? How cool!”

Major James Sullivan, Salvation Army says, “Slowly we're becoming a cashless society, and that leaves the bell ringers standing. So we want to make sure that the Salvation Army doesn't get left standing.”

These days fewer people carry cash in their wallets, and if they do, it's often a limited amount. So while some Salvation Army kettles may end up weighing less this year - the digital donation option could help meet the needs of more people that ever this Christmas.
