Amount Of Hazardous Waste In Idaho On The Increase

By Paul Johnson

Boise, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) - The Department of Environmental Quality said that the overall volume of hazardous waste generated in Idaho increased in 2013.

According to data compiled by DEQ in the "2013 Hazardous Waste Management in Idaho" report, hazardous waste generation volumes increased from 5,267 tons in 2012 to 10,767 tons in 2013, representing a 104 percent increase.

DEQ attributes the increase primarily to a one-time cleanup of petroleum and metals contamination at a single site. Minimal increases were also attributable to increased business activity as a result of economic growth.

Increases occurred in the categories of remediation waste, solvent waste, characteristic waste, treatment, storage, disposal waste, and other waste. A reduction occurred in the category of mixed waste.
