An Event To Promote Diversity Has Caused Controversy Instead

Olympia, Washington (CNN) An event to discuss diversity at a Washington community college has caused controversy instead.

This comes after an email sent to hundreds of staffers encouraged "staff, faculty and administrators of color" to reply to find out a secret time and location for a happy hour.

The invite also made it clear, white people were not invited.

Campus leaders say the wording was a blunder.

“It was obviously a mistake... it was badly worded. That's not diversity. That's anti what we're preaching here,” says Kellie Purce Braseth, SPSCC, Dean of College Relations

The next day the group apologized and canceled the event.

The program coordinator, who helped write the invite, says the email could have been worded differently.

However, she says staff members of color would have a more honest discussion about race without white employees present.
