Attorney seeks new trial for Utah death row inmate

Tools

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ An attorney for Michael Anthony Archuleta says the death row inmate deserves a new trial or new consideration of the punishment because his previous lawyers were ineffective.
In an appeal argued Wednesday, the Deseret News of Salt Lake City says Archuleta's attorney, James Slavens, also told Utah's
Supreme Court justices that another man has taken responsibility
for the murder of Gordon Ray Church.
Archuleta, 49, and Lance Wood were both convicted of killing a
28-year-old college student in 1989.
Archuleta was sentenced to death and Wood to life in prison
without parole.
Slavens says Wood took full responsibility for Church's death in
a 2009 affidavit.
State prosecutors say Wood's statement is part of a changing
explanation, not a confession.
It's not clear when justices might rule.
