Colorado Springs, CO (CBS) Firefighters continue their efforts today to combat the terrifying Colorado blaze that has moved through forests and neighborhoods – forcing thousands of evacuations and mounds of destruction.

Bone dry winds and high temperatures soaring into the nineties are driving the Waldo Canyon Fire...it has blackened over 2,000 acres since it erupted around noon on Saturday and tonight remains uncontained.

Colorado Hovernor John Hickenlooper was on the scene this morning.

"Our focus is that everyone stays safe, make sure people are evacuated, that we protect our firefighters."

Over one thousand and fifty homes have been evacuated in Colorado springs, as worried residents gather their possessions and move to safety.

"it's really scary to think that we could come back and its not going to be here."

Multiple agencies are battling this fire, with more help on the way. The governor says that almost half the nation's airborne firefighting equipment is now in Colorado.

Elsewhere firefighters have made progress. The High Park Wildfire just west of Fort Collins is now forty–five percent contained. That blaze which is now the second largest in state history burned over eighty two thousand acres over 16 days.
