Elizabeth Smart wins leadership award
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Elizabeth Smart is one of four women to receive a Vital Voices Award for her courage and leadership.
The Deseret News reports designer Diane von Furstenberg announced that Smart won the $50,000 award this week for her power to survive and the leadership to inspire others. In 2002, then-14-year-old Smart was snatched from her bed at knifepoint in the dead of night by street preacher Brian David Mitchell. Mitchell was convicted in December of kidnapping Smart, now 23-years-old and on a Mormon church mission in France. She plans to finish a music degree at Brigham Young University after she returns home in April. The awards will be presented on March 11. Comments ( |
