PROVO, Utah (AP) _ A 68-year-old retired Orem police lieutenant and academy official has been sentenced as a repeat sex offender to five years to life in Utah state prison for sexually abusing a young girl in 2005.
Fourth District Court Judge Steven Hansen in Provo heard impassioned pleas Tuesday from family members, and blamed John
Weatherly for abusing his position of trust with multiple victims.
Weatherly was sentenced on one count of felony aggravated sexual abuse of a child.
The Daily Herald of Provo reports that our other felonies were
dismissed when Weatherly pleaded guilty in March.
He's already in prison for a child sex abuse conviction in
Idaho.
Weatherly retired in 1996 after 21 years with Orem police and
worked for Utah's Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy from 1997 to 2002.
