Seattle, Washington (CNN) - Fast food workers in 50 cities across the United States are walking off the job today.
These pictures are from Seattle, where people are protesting for higher wages and the right to unionize without fear of retaliation. Currently, the median pay for the fast food workers across the country is just over nine dollars an hour. That's a little more than 18,000 dollars a year, even lower than The Census Bureau's poverty income threshold of 23,000 dollars for a family of four.
These protests have caught the attention of The White House. Earlier this summer, "low wage worker" protests were mentioned in a blog post from National Economic Council Director Gene Sperling. He wrote that raising the minimum wage was part of President Obama's economic vision.
