Fatal Bus Crash In Oregon Claims Nine

UPDATE: Between La Grande and Pendleton, Oregon (KEPR) Officials said the accident happened on the west end of the Blue Mountains. This is a stretch of the highway that tends to be icy in winter months.

ORIGINAL STORY: Pendleton, Oregon (KEPR/Oregon State Police) Nine people are dead following a bus crash on Interstate 84 near Pendleton, Oregon.

Saint Anthony Hospital told CBS affiliate KEPR that 18 patients were brought to their hospital with a wide range of injuries. Some of those patients were air lifted elsewhere with more severe injuries.

The bus driver survived the crash, but investigators have been unable to speak to the person because of the injuries. The name of the charter bus has not yet been released.

The bus was en route from Las Vegas to Vancouver, British Columbia.
Police believe the bus may have lost control while traveling down the snow– and ice–covered highway.
