Humpback Whale Entangled In Fishing Net
Petersburg, Alaska (CNN) - Wildlife crews are trying to free a humpback whale caught in fishing lines off the coast of Southeast Alaska.
The mammal has been entangled for two weeks. So far, crews have only been able to remove some of the gear trapping the whale, but officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say a "significant amount of gear remains."
Experts say the whale is able to breathe and does not appear to be in any immediate danger, but there is concern about the long-term impact from the tightly-wound lines.
The humpback first became entangled near Petersburg, Alaska on August 23.
