Idaho National Guard Now Supporting Firefighting Efforts
Boise, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Monday, 101 soldiers and airmen of the Idaho National Guard departed Gowen Field to assume their roles in support of firefighting efforts for the Trinity Fire. At the direction of Gov. Otter, they were activated for State Active Duty on Aug 19, when they reported to Gowen Field and received a number of briefings to prepare them for the mission. They also prepared themselves and stocked their vehicles with the supplies they’ll need for sustained operations over the next month; their mission is scheduled to end on Sep. 21 (date is subject to change). The men and women will provide checkpoint security and helicopter support to the incident commander. Additionally, one Idaho Army National Guard UH-72 Lakota helicopter will be based near Pine in order to rapidly provide evacuation for any medical emergency that might arise. U.S. Forest Service personnel came to Gowen Field to ensure final preparations were made and to certify the Idaho National Guard Joint Task Force was ready to go. Those preparations included providing the soldiers and airmen with packages of information to include current incident action plans, maps, situation reporters, closure restriction information and other information pertinent to the 20 checkpoints the Guardsmen will take responsibility for. USFS personnel also inspected National Guard vehicles to certify their functionality and safety at the fire scene.
