Missing Swimmer At Swan Falls Dam
Swan Falls Dam, Idaho (KBOI) The search is suspended for a swimmer near Swan Falls Dam. The man was reported missing late Thursday night. Police still have not released the name of the man they have been looking for at the dam, but this morning search teams were back at the scene.
It all started on Thursday night. A group of friends were camping along the Snake River at the dam. Police say one man decided to swim across the river. He made it but on his way back friends lost sight of him. Dive teams searched the river in the dark but found nothing.
Friday, crews were back at it again, this time searching from the air as well as from the water and the banks.
Chris Preston, a visitor says, "the Snake River is not a place in late winter or early spring that you want to swim in. The water would be so cold, there are a lot of currents. I think you would have to be pretty foolish, unless you were a hell of a swimmer with a wet suit to try."
Friday afternoon the water was about 56 degrees. With temperatures that cold, a person would be unconscious in about an hour.
"In the river I've never seen anybody swimming," adds Preston.
Normally people swim upstream at the reservoir. Down here at the dam, there are strong currents, a lot of rocks and very few places to be able to pull yourself up and out of the river. On top of those very dangerous conditions, police say alcohol could be a factor in his disappearance.
