Montana Man Charged With Killing German Exchange Student Appears In Court

By KMVT News

Missoula, Montana (CNN) A Montana man accused of fatally shooting a 17-year-old foreign exchange student appeared in court Monday.

29-year-old Markus Kaarma is charged with deliberate homicide.

A judge set bail at 30-thousand dollars.

Authorities say he shot and killed Diren Dede of Germany on Sunday.

He told police he fired his gun after finding an intruder in his garage.

But prosecutors say Kaarma and his roommate set a trap hoping to catch burglars who had allegedly stolen from the home in recent weeks.

Police say they left the garage door open and a purse in plain sight.
