Portland, Oregon ( KPTV ) "Have a Pint, Change the World." That's the motto of the nation's very first non–profit pub. Toss back a brew at this place in Portland, and you can help out your favorite charity at the same time.
At first it looks like your regular neighborhood pub, but you've never seen anything quite like the Oregon public house. The taps are flowing, the grill is fired up, and the very first customers are bellying up to the bar.
"We've been open for literally an hour or two we're figuring out our systems all our staff is here. So we're all getting trained together," adds Ryan Saari, the owner.
As the sign says, it's a soft opening so owner Ryan Saari and his staff are still working out some kinks. It's been years in the making but the world's very first non–profit pub is finally open for business.
Saari adds, "it's taken thousands of hours, hundreds of thousands of dollars and hundreds of volunteers to make this what it is."
The concept is simple: have a pint change the world. All the pub's profits go directly to these 8 local organizations listed behind the bar.
And here's the cool part — you get to decide which charity gets "your" money?
"Anytime you place an order you get to choose where you would like your individual proceeds to go, from a list of the charity's we're partnered with," explains Saari.
About a dollar from every pint gets donated and it adds up.
Ryan hopes to funnel 10–thousand dollars a month to the charities.
And customers love the idea.
Andrew James says, "I really like the idea of spending money and having it go somewhere rather than just in someone's pocket."
It's just getting off the ground but Ryan's on–of–a–kind pub has already received national attention.
And Ryan hopes his way of giving back catches on in other communities across the country.
"Our long term goal would be that this becomes something that is replicated all over, where people say that's a great idea I want to do it too, how can I be involve, how can I start one of these in my neighborhood or my city?"
