Obama Makes Organ Mountains A National Monument
New Mexico (CNN) President Obama is set to declare a nearly half-a-million-acre stretch of land in south-central New Mexico a national monument.
He's scheduled to sign a proclamation Wednesday afternoon at the Department of Interior to establish the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.
The 496-thousand-acre monument will be less than the 600-thousand acres originally requested.
The White House says the land that will be preserved will help protect a piece of American history and, according to an independent study, could generate 7.4 million dollars in economic activity.
