Gresham, Oregon ( KPTV ) An Oregon bakery is facing backlash after its owners refused to bake a lesbian couple's wedding cake. On Saturday, dozens of protesters stood on the sidewalk outside Sweet Cakes by Melissa calling their decision discrimination.

Honks of support Saturday afternoon for about 50 protesters outside sweet cakes by melissa in Gresham.

Harris says, "my sign says can't we all just eat cake... Equal rights for all."

The bakery's owners whipped up a huge controversy last week — refusing to bake a lesbian couple's wedding cake.

Walsh says, "if it had been a black couple people would be up in arms... A lot more than they are now."

Protesters say the bakery broke state law by discriminating against the brides to be.

"Business owners do have the right to refuse service to anyone... Anyone is a universal property. But when that refusal of service is solely based on someone's sexual orientation. No other reason. That is a crime."

Not so says Daniela Muench —– who showed up to protest the protesters. She sides with the owners – who say their religion is the reason they didn't bake the couple's cake.

Muench says, "if he believes in God and he full heartedly does not believe in same sex marriage then he shouldn't have to bake a cake for them. He should be able to freely deny them without all this backlash."

Despite the protest outside – Sweet Cakes was open for business.
Supportive customers lined up out the door.

Boettcher says, "I appreciate the fact that they're standing up for what they believe in and I want to show them support since there demonstrators not showing support."

Owners Aaron Klein and his wife Melissa say the backlash has been harsh – but they're standing by their decision.

Klein says, "it makes me feel good to know that even though everyone seems to think that Portland and the surrounding areas are so liberal there are some conservative Christians out there that want to make their voices heard."

The lesbian couple who was refused services will not be without a cake though. After the story received national attention, Ace of Cakes baker Duff Goldman offered to make their cake free of charge by reaching out to them on Twitter and the couple has accepted.

Goldman formally had his own show on Food Network — and he also made the cake for President Obama's inauguration last month.
