Poachers Take Chunks From California Redwoods

By KMVT News

California (CNN) California’s iconic Redwoods are in danger - from poachers.

Park rangers say thieves are cutting massive chunks from the base of the trees to sell on the black market.

The burl is then used to make furniture, bowls and even souvenirs.

Park rangers say burl is critical to protecting the tallest trees on earth from insect infestation and fire.

An eight-mile drive through Redwood National and State Parks in northern California has been shut down to help combat the crime.
