Russian tanker arrives in Alaska
NOME, Alaska (CNN) A Russian tanker carrying fuel arrived in Nome, Alaska, Saturday night with the help of a U-S Coast Guard ice breaker.
The tanker is filled with one-point-three-million gallons of petroleum products. It is the first-ever attempt to supply fuel to an Arctic Alaska settlement through sea ice. The cutter had to break through almost 300-miles of ice to lead the tanker to Nome. Nome has enough fuel to last until March -- but officials say the trip would have been more difficult by then Comments ( |
