The FAA Clears BP To Use Drones Over Pipeline Operations In Alaska

By Paul Johnson

Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (CNN) - A surprising decision by the FAA could lead to more commercial use of drones over land.
BP was granted permission to use a drone to survey pipelines, roads, and equipment in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
The area is the largest oilfield in the United States.
Until this point, the FAA has banned the use of drones for commercial purposes.
The drone's manufacturer conducted its first flight for BP on Sunday.
