Perez Likely to Be Tried in Nevada First

By Faye Hoffman

The man accused of critically wounding a Nampa police officer a week ago was in a courtroom in Reno, Nevada Wednesday morning. Mariano Perez, Jr. is charged there with illegal possession of a firearm, and drug trafficking.

When Reno police picked him up they say he had a pistol and a quantity of illegal drugs with him. A deputy district attorney says they'll probably prosecute him in Nevada before he's returned to Idaho, even though Governor Kempthorne has sent an extradition warrant to Nevada's governor.

The wounded Nampa officer, Cpl. Allen Williamson, was shot in the chest and is now listed in serious condition at a Boise hospital.
