Boise, Idaho (KMVT-TV) Idaho Power’s trout-stocking program brings thrills to a lot of anglers, and none bigger than the one Marvin Channer of Boise got when he recently won $1,000 in our twice-annual jaw-tag drawing.

He was fishing with his daughter and 4-year-old granddaughter at C.J. Strike reservoir last fall when he reeled in a 19-inch rainbow trout fitted with an Idaho Power jaw tag. He later called our toll-free number and provided information about his catch, which entered him in the drawing that earned him a nice payday. The next drawing takes place in September.

Each year, Idaho Power stocks trout in the Mid-Snake River, at locations from C.J. Strike Reservoir west to Centennial Park near Twin Falls. The most recent release came during the week of March 5, with 72,000 pan-sized rainbow trout released. A few thousand of those fish have jaw tags that can earn anglers a chance at $1,000.

The jaw-tag program is an important tool that helps Idaho Power and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game keep tabs on how many fish are being caught and where, Idaho Power biologist Ben Reingold said. To maximize the number of fish caught by anglers, Idaho Power adjusts the number of fish released at several locations along the Mid-Snake River based in part on the information gathered from anglers who report catching tagged fish.

Channer’s family regularly fishes C.J. Strike, taking advantage of Idaho Power’s trout-stocking program. On that same lucky fishing trip last fall, his granddaughter landed her first-ever trout – a 21-incher that had probably been in the river for a couple of years.

“Now she thinks every fish she catches should be that big,” he said. They were fishing from the bank near the Crane Falls Access, using worms and marshmallows as bait.
