BOISE, Idaho (AP) _ Governor Butch Otter is recommending state
funding for the soon-to-be-opened Center for Advanced Energy
Studies in Idaho Falls.

Otter, who originally opposed the move, is now asking for $1.8
million to partially fund staffing costs.

That's short of the $3 million original request by the center, a
partnership between the Idaho National Laboratory and Idaho's three
public universities.

Otter's change of heart comes after the University of Idaho,
Idaho State University and Boise State University met with the new
Office of Energy Resources about research goals to help meet
Idaho's energy needs.

There was also furious lobbying by the three schools and the
private company that runs INL to get the money.

A budget hearing is expected Wednesday.
