MERIDIAN, Idaho (AP) _ Meridian Middle School administrators say
a proposed dress code could help improve student performance.

The proposed code would require that students wear khaki pants
or skirts with polo shirts in white, black, yellow, navy or gray.

School officials say the measure would eliminate distractions
and allow student to focus on learning.

The middle school has not met academic performance standards set
by federal No Child Left Behind laws in four years.

School principal Lisa Austin is sending parents a ballot to vote
on the dress code this week.

Austin says she needs at least 80 percent of parents to respond,
and 70 percent of those parents to approve the measure before she
takes it to the Meridian School Board.
